the broad museum [los angeles]
by diller scofidio + renfro
engulfing the art collection is a precast concrete veil which diffuses the natural daylight and provides ultimate flexibility for the primary gallery space. the veil touches down at multiple points around the perimeter but lifts at times to mark the main entry and exit moments of the museum. the extreme rectilinear geometry of the exterior form is softened by subtle curvature within the structural veil and further juxtaposed with the complex curvature of the primary circulation. both escalator and stair deploy a tunnel-like quality with hidden cove lighting details and unique handrails which provide drama and levity while transitioning levels.
