sainte marie de la tourette [Éveux]

by le corbusier

perched on a hillside near lyon sits a masterwork by le corbusier. completed in 1961 this whimsical composition of reinforced concrete was the architect’s response to Father Marie-Alain Couturier’s request for him to "create a silent dwelling for one hundred bodies and one hundred hearts.” captured during a frozen winter state the building takes on a more brutal feeling with site and the grass covered roofs buried in snow. symbolism percolates the design from the rhythm of the glazing in reference to music, to the massive center pivot chapel door which strikes a perfect shadow line with the lighting beyond in order to create a large cross.
